If you're considering liposuction...
The liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body contour by removing excess fat accumulations beneath the skin. It is a medium of artistic expression that displays itself in a practical application of science, the production of beauty, the perfection of workmanship and the skill attained through intellectual inquiry and clinical experience. The excellence is measured by patient satisfaction, which is a function of safety, patient comfort and quality of the results.
Altough liposuction is a relatively new form of cosmetic surgery, there have been several recent improvements in the technique. One of the most significant improvements has been the introduction of Tumescent Technique.
The tumescent technique has evolved into two procedures: tumescent liposuction totally by local anesthesia (Lipocontouring) and tumescent liposuction with systemic anesthesia, IV sedation or narcotic analgesia (super wet liposuction).
Lipocontouring (Tumescent Microcanullar Liposuction Under Local Anesthesia):
This concept of liposuction has its main differences in the size of the cannulas and the ratio of the amount of infiltration solution by the sucked amount. Lipocontouring uses much finer microcannules and the usually double of the inflitration solution amount.
In Transmed our cosmetic and plastic surgeons -trained by Dr. Klein- preferably perform Liposuctions under local anesthesia by using the microcanullas (concept of Lipocontouring).
The major advantage of this concept is:
More Safety: It is well recognized that local anesthesia is considerably safer than the general anesthesia. The complications associated with general anesthesia are simply eliminated by not using the medications.
Less bruising and swelling: Super wet liposuction can be associated with bruising and swelling. One of the most important advantages of the Klein Tumescent solution is the minimalization of blood loss during and after the procedure. Therefore the risk of bruising and swelling is much decreased.
Better and smoother results: The tumescense liquid infiltrated into the fatty area has a further big advantage. Because of infiltrating more than double of the amount as sucked the "magnification" of the fat which should be removed is much higher. So the treated fatty areas are more easily recognized and can be taken out more accurate. The risk of post-surgical irregularities and unevenness is therefore minimized. The use of microcanullas (16 gauge-12 gauge; 0.7 mm-2.0 mm.) requires less effort and allows the surgeon to easily control the direction and position of the microcanullas. Being gentle with much more accuracy is possible. So the use of microcanullas give better and smoother results, therefore far fewer touch-up procedures are necessary.
Immediate post operative recovery: After Liposuction by general anasthesia, patients must be observed in a recovery room until it can be determined that they have not lost too much blood, and that the post-operative nausea and vomiting is not too profound. With the Klein Tumescent Techniue (Lipocontouring), there is virtually no blood loss and with local anesthesia there is rarely any nausea. Because of performing liposuction fully under local anasthesia the time for full recovery will be much less. After completion of the operation, patients are discharged home usually in about 30 minutes.
Quick return to normal activities: By not using stitches to close incision sites, there is an acceleration in the rate of healing. Open incision sites permit drainage of the slightly blood tinged anesthetic solution. This has had a dramatic effect in minimizing bruising. Most patients now notice that bruising is almost entirely absent one week after surgery.
Because the Klein Tumescent Technique (lipocontouring) eliminates bleeding and because the residual anesthetic solution drains out so quickly, there is less inflammation and the healing process is significantly accelerated.
As a result of the significant decrease in swelling and decrease in inflammation and pain after the surgery, patients are able to return to normal physical activities very soon after the surgery.
Less visible scars: With lipocontouring very small microcanullas are used. Therefore, only tiny incisions are required. The incisions are so small that it won't require any stiches. The wounds will heal and virtually disappear by themselves within time.
The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin. Individuals who have large areas of excess fat may also be good candidates for tumescent liposuction.
Although the anesthesia requirements are lessened and blood loss is minimized with tumescent liposuction, patients undergoing the procedure still might face some risks and cosmetic complications.
There are also risks specifically associated with the tumescent technique. These very rare complications include pulmonary edema (the collection of fluid in the lungs), which may occur if too much fluid is administered; and lidocaine toxicity, which occurs if the solution's lidocaine content is too high.
The risks can be minimized by choosing a board certified plastic surgeon who has adequate experience with the technique.
The long-acting effects of the anesthetic solution help to provide pain relief after the procedure and decrease the need for additional pain medication.
For the first day or two after surgery, patients might experience a little swelling in the treated areas, as well as some fluid drainage from the incision sites.
Light activity is usually resumed within the first few days after tumescent liposuction; normal activity can be resumed within a few weeks.
Patients are usually able to see a noticeable difference almost immediately after surgery. However, more improvement can be seen after three weeks. After about three months the final contour will be visible.
Patients are usually very pleased with the results of the procedure. By eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your slimmer figure or leaner physique.
